Collaboration with Yoshiko Yano

My ongoing work with Yoshiko Yano has allowed me to learn about the process of creating pottery from the point of view of an experienced maker. From initial ideas to the first firings in her garden studio, through to final pieces, this has been a fresh way for me to engage with objects of everyday life.

Yoshi’s ceramics work is rooted in the tradition of finding beauty in simple, functional objects that each have a unique spark to their essence. In response, I create markings, drawings and imagined worlds that infuse the pure white stoneware surface with a new conversation.

“Ashley’s art evokes fresh ideas and encourages me to explore something new. I appreciate her spontaneous approach, as she paints on the spot, responding to the shapes I’ve created.”
